Springtime in Hilton Head and Savannah

April 9 -16, 2012

Day 1--We leave Oklahoma City for a breathtaking experience of the south in the springtime. We will travel across eastern Oklahoma into the heart of the Ozarks where you will enjoy lunch on your own at Conway, AR. With pickups in Tulsa, we welcome our friends and get acquainted with our tour director and driver as well as our fellow travelers who will be our companions for the next eight days.  After lunch, we continue our travels east into the Mississippi Delta country of Eastern Arkansas with many rice fields and farmland. Upon arriving in Memphis, we will visit the famous Sun Studio which is the birthplace of Rock ‘n Roll. Sam Phillips captured the sounds of Beale Street with the likes of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and many more.  We arrive at our Drury Hotel in Horn Lake, MS just in time for evening hors d’oeuvres’, a welcome by the hotel staff, and a restful overnight stay.

Day 2--We make our way across Mississippi towards Tupelo where we will visit the boyhood home of the King of Rock n Roll, Elvis Presley.  Located in the hills of Northeast Mississippi, Tupelo charms its visitors with a unique blend of fascinating history.  Tupelo is the headquarters and the start of the Natchez Trace Parkway.

We then head southeast and into the state of Alabama for our lunch stop, on your own, in Birmingham.  As we leave Alabama, we make our way into western Georgia and enter the town of La Grange. Here in LaGrange, we take a guided tour of the famous Hills & Dales Estates, where it sits on the crest of a gently rolling hill. The centerpiece of the estate is a beautiful Georgian-Italian villa, designed by architects Hal Hentz and Neel Reid for the textile magnate Fuller E. Callaway, Sr. Completed in 1916, the home complements the formal boxwood gardens planted earlier in the mid-19th century by Sarah Ferrell. The property has been lovingly preserved by two generations of the Callaway family and is now open for public visitation. Guests can explore educational exhibits and experience an engaging film that tells the story of the estate. Visitors are provided a guided tour of the home and given the opportunity to explore the historic Ferrell Gardens.  We overnight in LaGrange.

Day 3--We begin traveling through eastern Georgia as we make our way to Warm Springs to visit the Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Little White House and Museum”.  Roosevelt built the Little White House in 1932 while governor of New York, prior to being inaugurated as our 32nd president in 1933. He first came to Warm Springs in 1924 hoping to find a cure for the infantile paralysis (polio) that had struck him in 1921; here we will have a self-guided tour.  Afterwards, we travel to an included lunch at the famous Bulloch House Restaurant made famous for their fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, biscuits, and salad bar. I’m sure we will come away with a full tummy and ready to travel the peach country. But save room for dessert because we have to have some Georgia peach desserts. You may choose from muffins, cobbler, ice cream, cookies and a lot more!  We reach our destination of Hilton Head, SC where we will spend the next three nights at the lovely Holiday Inn Resort on the beach.

Day 4-- starts with an amazing tour of Hilton Head with a local step on guide who will show us all the sights that this famous resort town is known for.  We will then have a free afternoon for shopping or relaxing on the beach or in your luxurious hotel room.

Day 5-- starts with an early departure for Savannah and a guided tour of this great city!  We will enjoy a step-on-guide for a three hour tour of all the gorgeous Southern-style homes, beautiful parks, and tree-lined walks and streets and historic sights and sounds.  We will savor the included lunch at the world famous Paula Deans “Lady and Two Sons” The  specialty is the buffet, which may include sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, deep-fried Twinkies, fried chicken, cheesy meatloaf, greens, beans, and creamed corn. Every meal comes with a garlic cheese biscuit and one of Dean's famous hoecakes. The restaurant is run by her sons when they are in town. After this meal, our driver will drop us at the center of the Savannah shopping where we can enjoy an afternoon of shopping and sight-seeing on our own.  We return to Hilton Head for our overnight stay.

Day 6--starts with our trip heading back west as we make our way into Tennessee.  Overnight at the Drury Inn in Nashville.

Day 7-- finds us touring the city of Nashville with an experienced step-on-guide and an included lunch at the Wildhorse Saloon.  The Wildhorse once housed a full-service radio studio, formerly used by WSM-FM when the station was also under Gaylord ownership. The room has since been converted into a small video arcade. The venue formerly hosted the Wildhorse Saloon Dance Show on The Nashville Network in the mid-1990s. It also served as an audition site for the second season of American Idol. More recently, it has served as home of the Idol spin-off Can You Duet on CMT.  After lunch, the afternoon finds us making our way to Memphis to overnight at the Drury Inn in Memphis.

Day 8-- is the saddest day of our journey as we make our way back to Oklahoma and reflect on the great times we had and new friends and memories we have made as we start planning our next trip with KINCAID COACH LINES TOURS!!!!
