Life on the Mississippi

July 24-29
6 Days, 5 Nights

Come journey back in time with Kincaid Tours to the “days when steamboats were the fastest, safest and most luxurious transportation in the country.  Relax on the promenade decks and enjoy the wildlife, towering bluffs and historic river towns and experience – Life on the Mississippi.”

Day 1: Tuesday, July 24:  We depart OKC with a stop in Tulsa to pick up additional passengers enroute to Kansas City.  Our tour this afternoon is the World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial. Come see “The Great War Through the Eyes of Those Who Lived It”.  This venue has been deemed the *must see museum* while visiting Kansas City.  Overnight Overland Park, Kansas.

Day 2: Wednesday, July 25: Before leaving the KC Metro area, we will welcome aboard Kansas City passengers.  Our afternoon tour will be visiting the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library in West Branch, Iowa.  We will learn the amazing story of an orphan boy who lived the American dream.  Herbert Hoover became a multi-millionaire engineer, a worldwide humanitarian, and the 31st President of the United States.  Overnight in Le Claire, Iowa.  (B)

Day 3, Thursday, July 26:  You will have a choice this morning with breakfast. A hot breakfast will be served at our hotel and/or a continental breakfast awaits us onboard the Riverboat Twilight, a replica of  Victorian steamships of a century ago.  Keep your cameras and binoculars handy as there will be lots to see as we steam our way upriver.  Our captain will also explain “locking through” as we pass through Lock and Dam #’s 12 and 13.  Showtime each afternoon showcases a variety of folk musicians, humorists and if we are lucky, maybe an appearance by Mark Twain himself. And we can’t forget the food… as both lunch and dinner will be served onboard at our group’s table.  You will not go hungry on this trip as snacks are also served morning and afternoon, besides coffee, tea and lemonade served throughout the day.  Our lodging this evening is at the beautiful Grand Harbor Resort in Dubuque.  This city is “overflowing with things to do and see. Take a stroll along the Mississippi Riverwalk, then ride on the Fenelon Place Elevator and explore the Victorian architecture that adorns the bluffs. Try your luck in one of Dubuque's state-of-the-art casinos or sip on a glass of locally made wine or toast with a local brew.”  And don’t forget the small boutiques for a wonderful shopping experience. (B,L,D)

Day 4, Friday, July 27:  After a hot breakfast buffet, you will have almost the entire morning to peruse Dubuque one last time before boarding the Twilight.  Sit back and enjoy the scenery as we lazily head back downriver to Le Claire.  Overnight will back in Le Claire. (B, L, D)

Day 5, Saturday, July 28: Kalona is our destination this morning after a hot breakfast at our hotel.  Kalona is the largest Amish and Mennonite settlement west of the Mississippi.  A step-on guide will tell us the story of the Kalona Amish as we tour the countryside. Lunch today will be quite a treat as we will be welcomed guests in an Amish home.  Later that evening we say goodbye to our new Kansas City friends.  Overnight in Overland Park. (B,L)
